BEAE Celebrates International Literacy Day
The Basic Education Association in Ethiopia in collaboration with DVV and UNESCO has celebrated the international literacy day in Addis Ababa and Oromia region on September 8, 2005.
This year's celebration was unique because, unlike the usually academic exercise meetings in the capital, it was held with the participation of illiterate adults from parts of Oromia. In the occasion, the importance of adult education was highlighted, and the illiterate adults were able to discuss their views on problems and solutions related to adult education. On the other hand the occasion was celebrated in an academic symposium in Addis Ababa . In the symposium, papers on Adult and non formal education were presented and discussed in which the need for coordination of resource and expertise, and common strategy was agreed. The follow up of the out come of the symposium was entrusted on BEAE and DVV. Among the participants of the symposium were experts of non formal education from all regions. An expert from the Ministry of Education of Djibouti has also participated and presented their experience on Adult Education.
Posters, T-shirts and banners were prepared, and public announcements regarding the occasion were broadcasted on Television and Radio in different languages.
Meeting on Education for Rural Africa
A meeting on education for rural people was held in Addis Ababa from September 7-9, 2005. The meeting was attended by Eleven African ministers and higher officials of education. BEAE has attended the meeting as a representative of Local NGOs.
The central theme of the meeting was to promote education for rural African people. Most Africans live in rural areas and the development of Africa is unthinkable without educating these people. Experiences from many African countries were discussed in this regard. Finally the participant of the meeting agreed that to promote education in rural areas rural teachers have to be motivated and retained by fringe benefits. The meeting has also enabled participants to share experience, and have common agenda on promoting education for rural people.
Training on Fund Raising Basics
A three day long intensive training on "Fund Raising Basics" has been conducted from 29-30 July, 2005 in Nazareth . The training was designed to acquaint techniques and thereby enhance capacitors of member organization in the area of fund raising to support their projects and programs, and know skills of negotiation and bargaining.
